In honor of this momentous year, our traditional crystals cover (the best from 2013) takes a new form: crystal images are projected onto a solid figure. The images featured are from the following articles: Baelen et al. (2013), Bandeiras et al. (2013), Choi et al. (2013), Degtjarik et al. (2013), Ha et al. (2013), Haikarainen et al. (2013), Huang et al. (2013), Iourin et al. (2013), Kikuchi et al. (2013), Li et al. (2013), Liu et al. (2013), SaijoHamano et al. (2013), Sartmatova et al. (2013), Shan et al. (2013), Squeglia et al. (2013), Trastoy et al. (2013) and Vengadesan et al. (2013). Also, in honor of the International Year of Crystallography, Acta Crystallographica Section F will be publishing a series of articles on the state of the art of macromolecular crystallization. The series begins in this issue with an introductory article written by Drs Alexander McPherson and Jose Gavira. Throughout 2014 and into 2015 one article per month will be published on important aspects of crystallization. You will note that the Editorial Board includes a new Section Editor, Professor William Hunter of the University of Dundee. His fellow editors welcome him to the team and look forward to working with him. Finally, we would all like to thank to our authors, Co-editors, reviewers (especially our review panel) and the editorial staff in Chester for all their hard work during 2013.

Liquid-Crystal-Enabled Active Plasmonics: A Review
Liquid crystals are a promising candidate for development of active plasmonics due to their large birefringence, low driving threshold, and versatile driving methods. We review recent progress on the interdisciplinary research field of liquid crystal based plasmonics. The research scope of this field is to build the next generation of reconfigurable plasmonic devices by combining liquid crystal...
متن کاملEffect of temperature on wet agglomeration of crystals
Objective(s):This study dealt with the wet agglomeration process in which a small quantity of binder liquid was added into a suspension of crystals, directly in the stirring vessel where the crystallization took place. The purpose of this investigation was evaluation of the effect of temperature on the agglomeration process in order to gain insight into the mechanism of the formation of the agg...
متن کاملCrystallographic preferred orientations analysis of quartz crystals in Psammite using electron backscatter diffraction, western Ireland
The present study investigates the crystal preferred orientation (CPO) of quartz crystals in psammitic rocks to ascertain the deformationmechanism using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) on quartz crystals from north of the Renvyle-Bofin Slide (RBS) nearLetterfrack in western Ireland. Complete crystallographic orientations were determined for several thousand individual quartz crystalsin ...
متن کاملTrial by fire: are the crystals macromolecules?
Protein crystallization screens frequently yield salt crystals as well as protein crystals. A simple method for determining whether a crystal is composed of salt or macromolecules is suggested. A drop containing one or more crystals is transferred to a glass cover slip and the cover slip is then passed through the flame of a Bunsen burner. Macromolecule crystals are destroyed by this treatment,...
متن کاملبررسی استفاده از غشاهای زئولیتی برای آبزدایی ازسوخت DMAZ (علمی-پژوهشی)
Liquid fuel dimethyl aminoethyl azide (DMAZ) has been attended by many researchers as a new green fuel in recent years. Ssynthesis of the fuel has led to a process contains dehydration of DMAZ as a highlighted section. In this study, dehydration of DMAZ/water solution has been investigated by using four different zeolite membranes as HSOD, NaA, LTT and NaX that cover different pore sizes. Many ...
